EAST JACKSON AUDIT

East Jackson Community Schools earned praise from its auditor Monday night for increasing its general fund balance this year for the first time since 2004.

CPA Randy Purvis of Drake, Watters & Associates gave the district's annual audit report Monday and said the general fund balance went up this year by $59,000, even though a deficit of $349,000 was projected.

"You are to be commended for doing an outstanding job of reversing a trend that you could not continue," Purvis told the board. "You've tightened all the screws and knobs that you can tighten."

Superintendent Paul Reeves said the district's general fund balance stands at $659,000, which is 5.9 percent of its approved 2010-11 budget. Last year the general fund balance was at 5.3 percent.

Reeves said he is pleased East Jackson's general fund balance increased this year when most districts in the state are seeing their decrease. He said two factors were at play.

"First, the tax revenue came in higher than budgeted," Reeves said. "Secondly, last year with the cuts from the state we put a substantial amount of cuts on our spending, as much as possible without affecting the kids."
